Well, my trip is nearing its end...which leads me to ask: Is someone still able to come get me at the airport Tuesday night at 10:20?

I can't wait to see you all! :)

Rocky Mountain Spotted Woes

So Jen and & ran into our nice neighbor J. while procuring coffee at his place of employment the other day (OK, it's the Co-op) and he shared a tale of "woe and sorrow" with us:

While at our first-night backyard BBQ a few weeks back, he was bitten by a tick that was carrying the dread Rocky Mountain spotted fever, a fact he was unaware of until he started feeling really sick a couple of days later.

"I had to leave work because I thought I was getting the flu," he explained. "It was so bad I had to puke on the side of the road on the way home, like a god-damned hobo!"

Indeed, with his dense beard, the hobo comparison is not inappropriate... thankfully J. tramped his way to a doctor who prescribed him some heavy-duty antibiotics in the nick of time. Apparently people can die from this- and since C. very recently found a tick lurking its way into our porch relaxation time we've been especially mindful of these beastly critters. Watch your back (or ear).

Thank the lord our friends at Wikipedia can tell us all about this cheerful affliction.

My cousin Nathan's wife, Rebecca, telling me about her college reunion:

"Everyone kept saying like, 'I have two kids--one is 4 and one is 2,' so I started saying, 'yes, I have three bikes--one is 10, one is 3, and the other will turn 1 next month!' Only some people thought it was funny."

:-D

new blog title/paprikash

we've changed the name and the URL of the blog to poplog and poplaganda (thank you, c. shanley), respectively, in another post-dinner haze. tonight jen made a delicious paprikash with special paprika imported straight from hungary. dang! it was delicious. the rest of the night may or may not be filled with porch-sitting, beer-drinking, and lethargic wire-watching. mmm.

just sayin hi

Hi! and look what I saw today at Mesa Verde National Park. This was actually lizard #7 or 8 (well, maybe 5 or 6, but we did lose count). My cousin Jon was pretty amused to see me freak out though. I think you guys would like him--I'll have to get him to come visit sometime (Jon, not the lizard).

I see on accuweather.com that tomorrow's RealFeel for Chapel Hill is 106 and for that I am very sorry. High of 79 tomorrow here in Durango.

I hope you had a good trip today, Erin! I miss you all very much and can't wait to get back, hot or not ;)

alabama o'clock

i'm currently lounging in my parents' kitchen in beautiful marbury, alabama, where the roads are dirt and the heat is oppressive. the highlight of my day today was, and i can't believe i am saying this, but driving to town in dad's four-wheel-drive pickup, windows down, listening to hank williams singin' about his lady's cheatin' heart. drama!

so i guess alabama is a vacation? and it is, in that i'm sleeping a lot and not doing much. but i will be glad to be back in poplar's (and by poplar's, i mean you ladies') loving arms on sunday. i showed mom and pop some photos of the house and of you lovely ladies, and they said something 'bout coming to visit in october when it's not 9 million degrees out. sounds fine to me.

miss y'all! can't wait to be in a home i can call home again.

interim jen

I'm so in-between. Today, as my two lovely social-chair roommates are out of town, I am acting as temporary social empress and commanding throngs of library and information scientists (nerdy mcnerdsters) in the quest for fizzy alcoholic beverages. Whiskey, gin or beer? Who can say? I may be practical, but I only think about my future booze consumption. No premature planning or commitment of course.
It is going to be like 5 million degrees out today. I hope the window opening fairy will air out the house before I return to it tonight (likely booze buzzed at best). Lucky for miss HK, she and I wrestled the spare air conditioning unit into her window last night without dropping it from the second floor and smashing hopeful lechers who were probably already disappointed to see that I finally hung a curtain in front of my window. HK's room now has the potential to be cool and full of toxic inhalants! Huzzah!

I may or may not have had 3 smirnoff ices today

Yes! House blog! it will always be poplog in my heart.

That dinner sounds awesome--especially the PBR in wine glasses--and it just makes me miss you all that much more! I can't wait to see our house all settled in and I'm only sorry not to be there for it. I think the roller skating thing is a GREAT idea and Jen, I couldn't stand to get happy hour emails in my spirit from anyone but you :) Also, for the record, I will get in to Chapel Hill late Tuesday June 17 and will leave for PA Thursday morning (June 19).

Here's a picture of our magnolia tree blooming (taken the day before I left--maybe it has more than one bloom on it now?)

true, hk's home-cooked meal was delicious, and as we semi-inebriatedly discussed librarian rollerskating, we also decided to start a house blog. true. that's what delicious dinners and white wine do to us.

meanwhile, overheard in the living room:

"i wouldn't mind you hollering at me, but..."
- hk, insisting that she shouldn't join twitter because it'd be so bad
(consider this peer pressure, kiddo)

We came up with the idea for this blog a half an hour ago while drinking PBR out of wine glasses in the kitchen together. Hey, it matched the classy meal we had beforehand (farmers market peas in organic cream with herbs, organic pasta w/ local spinach, garlic, and procuitto di parma, cantaloupe, fancy co-op bread with brie that was slightly nuked in our gigantic 15 year old microwave). I hope this sets a pattern for brainstorming sessions to come.

me. domineering in the title.
